Privacy Policy

Effective date: August 1, 2026 Last updated: August 1, 2026

The Rising Gazette ("The Rising Gazette," "we," "us," or "our") respects the privacy of everyone who visits our website, enrolls a student in our course, subscribes to our periodical, or contacts us. Because much of what we do involves young people, we take this responsibility seriously.

This policy explains what information we collect, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices you have. It applies to risinggazette.org, to our enrollment and subscription process, and to information we collect by email or in person at our classes.

Who we are: The Rising Gazette L3C, Contact: contact@risinggazette.org

A note to parents and guardians

Our course is designed for people under the age of 18. A parent or legal guardian must complete enrollment and payment on behalf of a minor student. We do not knowingly permit children to register, purchase, or submit personal information to us on their own.

Information about a student comes to us from the enrolling parent or guardian — not from the student. We ask parents not to have their children fill out our forms.

If you are a parent or guardian, you have the right at any time to:

  • Review the personal information we hold about your child
  • Ask us to correct or delete it
  • Withdraw your consent to our further collection or use of it
  • Refuse permission for your child's name or work to appear in print, without affecting their participation in the course

To make any of these requests, email contact@risinggazette.org from the address used at enrollment. We may ask for reasonable verification that you are the parent or guardian before acting on a request.

If we learn that we have collected personal information directly from a child under 13 without verifiable parental consent, we will delete it promptly.

How our enrollment process works

Enrollment happens in two steps, and different information is collected at each one.

Step one — payment. Payment is handled by Stripe, Inc. on a page hosted by Stripe. There you provide the paying adult's name, email address, billing address, and card details. We do not ask for the student's name or any information about the student on the payment page, and your full card number is submitted directly to Stripe — it does not pass through or rest on our systems. We receive a confirmation containing the payer's name and email, the amount, the date, and the last four digits of the card.

Step two — enrollment details. After payment you may be returned to a form on our own site, where the parent or guardian provides the student's information and the permissions described below. This form is ours, and the information goes to us rather than to Stripe.

Information we collect

Information you give us

Enrollment. From the parent or guardian: your name and phone number, and the student's name and grade level. We also record which classes the student attends and completes, and your choices about byline and photo permissions.

We deliberately do not ask for a student's date of birth, home address, phone number, email address, school, or photograph. If you believe we need to know something about your student — an accommodation, an allergy, a safety concern — please tell us by email rather than entering it in a form, and we will keep it with the enrollment record and share it only with the instructor.

Payment. As described above, Stripe collects and processes payment details. We hold only the transaction record, the payer's name and email, and the last four digits of the card, which we need for receipts, refunds, and accounting.

Subscriptions. From subscribers: name, mailing address, email address, and subscription history, so we can deliver the paper and manage your account. Subscription payments are also handled by Stripe.

Donations and sponsorships. From donors and business contacts: name, email address, mailing address, the details of the contribution, and any recognition preferences you express.

Contact form and email. Your name, email address, and whatever you choose to include in your message. The contact form uses a CAPTCHA to reduce automated spam.

Article submissions. The article and any accompanying materials, the writer's name and contact details, and the byline the writer and their parent or guardian have approved.

Please do not include Social Security numbers, financial account details, or information about health, religion, or political affiliation in any form on our site.

Information collected automatically

When you visit our site, our hosting provider records technical information such as your IP address, browser type and version, device type, operating system, referring page, the pages you view, and the date and time of your visit. This is used for security and to keep the site running properly.

Stripe sets cookies on its own checkout page and uses them for fraud prevention and to make the payment work. These are Stripe's cookies, governed by Stripe's privacy policy, and we do not control them.

We do not use third-party analytics or advertising trackers on our site.

How we use your information

We use the information described above to:

  • Enroll students, run our classes, and communicate schedule or location changes
  • Fulfill and deliver subscriptions
  • Process payments, issue receipts, and handle refunds
  • Review, edit, and publish submitted articles, and pay writers their share of subscription revenue
  • Respond to inquiries, requests, and sponsorship conversations
  • Keep records required for tax, accounting, and legal purposes
  • Maintain the security and proper functioning of our website
  • Send occasional updates about The Rising Gazette to people who have asked to receive them

We will not use your information for a materially different purpose without telling you first.

Publishing student work

Articles in The Rising Gazette are written by young people, so how we identify them in print matters.

We publish a student's byline only with the written permission of the student's parent or legal guardian. The parent or guardian chooses how the writer is identified — for example, full name, first name and last initial, or first name and age only. We do not publish a young writer's home address, email address, phone number, school, or photograph without separate written permission.

Once an issue has been printed and mailed, we cannot recall it. If permission is withdrawn afterward, we will honor the change in all future issues and in any online or archived version we control, but printed copies already in circulation are outside our control. Please keep this in mind when giving permission.

Sources quoted in student articles are handled the way any newspaper handles them: if someone speaks to a reporter on the record, their name and comments may appear in print.

When we share information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties for their own marketing purposes.

Stripe. Stripe processes payments for us. Stripe is not simply acting on our instructions — for payment processing, fraud prevention, and its own legal and regulatory obligations, Stripe determines how it uses the information it collects and acts as an independent controller of that information. Stripe's handling of your payment data is governed by its own privacy policy, available at stripe.com/privacy. We encourage you to read it.

Other service providers. Our website host and email provider Accuweb, and our printer or mailing house receive only the information they need to perform their function and are not permitted to use it for anything else.

Instructors. Class rosters, containing student names and any accommodations you have told us about, are shared with the instructor teaching that class and with no one else.

Publication. Approved bylines and article content are published in the periodical and distributed to subscribers, as described above.

Legal requirements. We may disclose information if required by law, subpoena, or court order, or where we believe in good faith that disclosure is necessary to protect the safety of a child or another person, to investigate fraud, or to enforce our terms.

Business transfers. If The Rising Gazette merges with or transfers its operations to another organization, information may transfer as part of that transaction. We would notify affected individuals, and any successor would remain bound by this policy or provide notice of a change.

Third-party links and social media

Our site links to external sites, including Stripe's checkout page and our Facebook and Instagram pages. Once you follow a link, you are subject to that site's privacy policy, not ours. We have no control over how those companies collect or use information.

How long we keep information

  • Contact form messages and general inquiries: until requested to delete
  • Student enrollment and completion records: until requested to delete
  • Payment, subscription, and donation records: as long as required by tax and accounting rules, generally seven years
  • Article submissions and byline permissions: for the life of the archive, since they document our right to publish
  • Marketing email lists: until you unsubscribe

Stripe retains payment records under its own schedule, which we do not control.

How we protect information

We use industry-standard measures to protect the information we hold, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) across our site, access to student records limited to the people who need them, and a PCI-compliant payment provider that keeps card numbers off our systems entirely. Class rosters are stored in a password-protected account accessible only to the program director and instructors and are not circulated by email or kept on personal devices.

No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affecting your personal information occurs, we will notify you as required by applicable law.

Your choices and rights

Regardless of where you live, you may ask us to:

  • Confirm what personal information we hold about you or your child
  • Provide a copy of it
  • Correct information that is inaccurate
  • Delete information we no longer need to keep
  • Stop sending you marketing email — you can also use the unsubscribe link in any such message

Email contact@risinggazette.org to make a request. We will respond within 45 days and will tell you if we need more time. We will not deny you service or charge you a different price for exercising these rights. If we decline a request, we will explain why and how you can appeal.

Requests about payment records held by Stripe should be directed to Stripe, though we are glad to help you reach them.

Utah residents. The Utah Consumer Privacy Act gives residents rights to access and delete personal data and to opt out of targeted advertising and the sale of personal data. We do not sell personal data or engage in targeted advertising. We honor these requests from all site visitors, whether or not the Act applies to us by its terms.

Visitors from outside the United States. Our operations and servers are located in the United States, and information you send us will be processed here. If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we process your information to perform a contract with you, to comply with legal obligations, or on the basis of our legitimate interest in operating our program — and where consent is the basis, you may withdraw it at any time. You may also lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control. We do not track visitors across other websites, so these signals have nothing to opt out of on our site.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as our program grows — for example, when the periodical begins publication or if we add new tools to the site. We will post the revised policy here with a new "last updated" date. If the changes materially affect how we handle information about children or enrolled students, we will notify parents and guardians by email.
